Any athlete can tell you what it’s like to be in a slump. No matter what sport it is, everyone goes through a time when nothing seems to be going his way; and the North Scott Boys Soccer team is no exception.

Lancers took on Assumption at home in what seemed to be a very winnable game. Unfortunately the Knights were able to come out on top with an overtime goal and beat the Lancers 1-0.

“It just seems like we’ve forgotten how to win,” said junior defender Dane Mikkelsen. Which may seem correct considering that the Lancers have lost their last four conference games to Muscatine (5-0), Pleasant Valley (8-1), Davenport Central (4-2), and now Assumption.

“I think part of our problem is all the new position changes,” said junior goaltender Matt Pacha. “Its really hard to win when players are unfamiliar with their position.”

If you’re apart of the French program at North Scott High School, you’ve probably heard the news. Mrs. Pearson has decided to retire.
There is one major question that comes from this news: What will happen to the French program at North Scott? There are many answers to this question- some good and some bad.
Right now, Mrs. Gray, is teaching Spanish and one block of French II. This means that there is another teacher in our school who can teach French classes, but there is also Spanish classes that need to be taught. One option that our school has is to have Mrs. Gray take on all of the French classes, and also some Spanish.
Another option is to send the students who want to still take French to another school to take the class. The other high school has to be on the same block schedule, like us. Not only would the students who want to take French be able to finish and get the credits, but the could possibly go further than just French 4, since most other schools offer beyond that.
Options three and four are on different ends of the spectrum. The first is to hire a new French teacher. This may sound like a good idea, but since the enrollment for French is so low, would it really be necessary? On the other hand, getting rid of the French program over all is also an option. Although this would upset many people, this could be the path that our school takes.
While the fate of North Scott’

s French program is still up in the air, students can make a difference by talking to the school board, principal, and counselors. If you care about the French program, you will speak up and get your voice heard!

Every year Mr. Merrick’s Physics and Conceptual Physics classes compete in the “All American Egg Drop”. This is a test of the student’s knowledge on momentum and impulse.

Competitors build a devise with five sheets of computer paper, a meter of masking tape, and one egg. The object is to find a way to make your egg survive a one to five story fall. The following are the results from the conceptual physics egg drop:

The winners managed to drop his or her eggs four stories before breaking (and that’s no yolk):

Whitney VanPelt, Chelsea Carrol, Shelby Lindaman, and Emily Frederichsen.

Other winners include, but are not limited to: Andrew Oberlander and Jeordon Keeney.

By Aislinn Martin

As we all know, flu season is beginning to rear its ugly head in the North Scott community. Several students have become ill in the past few weeks, causing them to miss school and school events. So unless you want to come down with something nasty, follow these tips for staying healthy this season:

1) For the millionth, bazillionth time, WASH YOUR HANDS—and not just after using the restroom. Wash your hands before and after you eat, prepare food, or are around a large group of people. If you don’t have a sink handy, a dollop of hand sanitizer will do the trick.
2) Get tons of sleep. Most high school students don’t get enough of it as it is, but it’s especially critical during flu season. Try to get at least 8-10 hours of sleep every night. This will not only decrease your chances of getting the flu, but it will keep you focused during the school day.
3) Load up on Vitamin C—it’s necessary for a healthy immune system. You can get extra C from orange juice, most fruits, and some fruit juices. Just check the nutrition label.
4) Actually load up on ALL of your vitamins. If you don’t already take a daily multivitamin, now would be a good time to start. Target and Wal-Mart have a large variety, so you can choose the one that’s best for you. It’s pretty simple: healthy is the opposite of sick, and healthy bodies require vitamins and minerals to function correctly.

Sometimes getting sick is inevitable, but if you take these precautions, your chances of catching the flu get much slimmer.

By Jameson Shank

“It’s over”, I thought as I awoke on the gloomy Monday morning after homecomming. The thought never re-entered my consciousness as I went through my morning ritual, which had become mind-numbingly routine. When I entered the school that cold October day, friends were surprisingly mum about the events that had taken place only a few days before. Everyone had gone back to his or her usual way of doings things. No longer was there an urgent need on peoples’ minds to prepare for approaching festivities.
I felt good that the weekend had ended, even if I now had a sliver of regret about getting that haircut for the dance. No longer was I trapped by the obsession of finding a homecoming date. I had accepted facts: I waited until it was too late to get someone to go with. I ended up going in a group just as I had the year before, not as fun, but at least I had “backup”.
The Thursday before homecoming was a dreary one as the rain showed no signs of letting up before the parade. There had not been a single year while I’ve been in North Scott that I did not attend the parade. This year however, I had no drive, no need to satisfy what had become tradition. I convinced myself that I was not going because of the weather, but deep down inside I knew I just wasn’t in the mood. The blackened skies, which hung low over Eldridge, seemed to capture my disposition perfectly.
On Friday I had every intention of going to the homecoming game. I always went to every Lancer home game and I didn’t think twice about going to this one. The day went by uncomfortably slow and when it finally ended, a bitter chill met me as I left the school. That blackened sky, which had soured my disposition the day before, made the thought of standing on the bleachers that night unbearable. So, I made a bold decision: I chose not to witness the merriment that was to take hold at the game.
While hordes of students, friends, and family flooded Lancer stadium, I was comfortably removed from the affair. Some friends, who also chose to skip the game, and I spent the night stuffing our faces and capturing the moment with a video camera. Sure it wasn’t as exciting as a skirmish between the Lancers and Burlington, but it was still the best memory I had of that week. For a few measly hours, the stress and anxiety that plagued me for days had disappeared.
I waited until Saturday, the day of the homecoming dance, to actually purchase some attire. New shirt, new shoes, and new slacks- I had to look my best, even if I didn’t have a date. My hair, which was considered to be my best asset by many, was cut down to what I thought was a respectable length. My head was no longer topped with a curly mess of hair that had become all too familiar to myself. After picking up my male “gal pals” and heading to the school, we all had to suffer through the dance’s unessessarily restrictive security. If I didn’t know better I’d say I spent the better part of the night waiting in line to get into the pit.
The rest of that night was spent sitting on the sidelines watching everyone else dance the minutes away, or frantically trying to catch up with Tim, our photographer for the Lance. I had received plenty of comments about my hair from people who were saddened by the “unfortunate” loss. So far, the one major homecoming event I had attended was looking like a dud. After painfully sitting through The Black Eyed Peas’ I’ve Got a Feeling, the dance finally ended. As I went home, I thought of the clothes I was wearing which would soon retire to a closet, only to be worn on seldom occasions. I thought of the opportunities of the past couple days which I had so graciously missed. On that Saturday night, and the Monday that would soon follow, the radiant shine of scarlet and silver dimmed and faded away.
