Not only was September 28 the kick-off of Homecoming week, it also marked the beginning of the 24th annual Student Food Drive. Students from all over the Quad Cities came together to perform skits to compete for a 2,000 pound donation of canned food from Hy-Vee to be added to their final total. The prize ultimately went to QC Christian.
A total of 18 schools are participating in the six-week challenge that ends on loading day, November 5. North Scott has already begun with activities like PowderPuff football, where spectators donated cans for admittance, and other events will be scattered throughout the next month and a half.
More and more people are relying on the donations to sustain their families. “Today’s economy has brought record numbers of people to our facilities,” said Tom Laughlin, executive director of the River Bend Foodbank. In the 23 years the project has been running, area schools have collected more than 12 million pounds of food, valued at more than $23 million.
So keep a look out for the upcoming events and get involved in a great cause. This could be the year North Scott sets a record.
Don’t forget Mr. North Scott on Saturday, October 17.
