Where School Spirit is Limited
by Elisa Stegman
Friday night comes—the highlight of the week. “Get fired up!” rings in the ears of students as they come to the game decked out in spirit. After years of having free reign over what they could wear, students showing spirit has been limited.
In the past few years, the student section has faced several changes, mostly with theme nights. Whiteout and blackout games have caused a stir with racially diverse schools that assume the whiteouts and blackouts are planned to antagonize rather then show spirit. Now, certain MAC leaders are cracking down on students who are decked out in body paint without shirts, including girls in sports bras. All indoor MAC games require students to wear shirts, and according to Activities Director Frank Wood, outdoor games are now also in the debating process. Disagreeing with MAC leaders, Wood believes “It’s just school spirit—and that’s a good thing.”
At next Friday’s game, MAC leaders are requiring students to enter the game wearing shirts; if not, they will be sent home.
Students: bring a shirt along with you to the game and dress appropriately (while following the themes.) There is a possibility that this rule won’t stick, but until then, follow the rules.
